3 Fishing Spots You Can't Miss In Central Montana

By Hidden Montana | 2025

Montana’s reputation for epic fishing usually points west—think Missoula, Bozeman, and that famous Norman Maclean river. But if you’re anywhere near Lewistown, central Montana has some absolute bangers that fly way under the radar. Crystal-clear water, insane mountain views, and way fewer people. Here are three spots that locals love and you’re about to as well. Check current regs and access here.

1. East Fork Reservoir – The Chill Pike & Perch Hideout 11 miles southeast of Lewistown (just past Heath)

Vibe: Pure relaxation mode. No-wake rule means it’s dead quiet—perfect for a kayak, canoe, or just kicking back on the dock with a cold one.

Target species: Northern pike and yellow perch (pretty rare for this part of the state), and some trout.

Tactics: Throw spinners, spoons, or live bait. The water gets deep fast off the dam.

Bonus: Killer ice fishing in winter when pike and perch are stacked up.

If you want a mellow day and a legit shot at a toothy critter on the line, this is it.

2. Big Springs Creek (below the Trout Hatchery) – Fly-Fishing Paradise right next to the Big Springs Trout Hatchery, 15 minutes southeast of town.

Vibe: Stupid-clear water, thick weeds swaying in the current, and springs bubbling up that keep hatches popping 365 days a year. Translation: you can actually catch trout here in February.

Target species: Fat rainbows and sneaky browns that have seen little pressure.

Tactics: Fly rod—bring your 4- or 5-weight and a good selection of nymphs and dries. The willows are grabby, so pick your casting lanes wisely.

Pro tip: Head downstream from the hatchery and you’ll discover a few local access spots along the way — this area is a mix of public and private land, so tread respectfully.

3. Big Springs Creek – Reed & Bowles Stretch (Joyland Road) Just a few minutes northwest of Lewistown off Joyland Road.

Vibe: Classic meadow creek with perfect riffle-pool-run rhythm and zero crowds.

Target species: Rainbow trout, brown trout, mountain whitefish.

Tactics: You can fling spinners or go full fly-fishing nerd—both crush it here.

Standout feature: Wildlife overload. Deer tiptoeing through the willows, eagles overhead, and beavers doing their thing at dusk. It’s legit Montana postcard material.

Hot spot: Cross the irrigation ditch from the parking area, follow the trail through the trees, walk about 50 yards, and you’ll drop into a deep, glassy pool that always holds fish.

Bottom line: You don’t have to fight the western Montana crowds to get your fix. These three central Montana gems deliver big fish, insane scenery, and that “I’ve got the whole river to myself” feeling. Grab your rod, hit the road, and thank me later. Tight lines!
