New Technologies in Rock Art Research

ROCK ART EXPERT TO DISCUSS NEW MONTANA FINDS JULY 13 AT NATIONAL DISCOVERY CENTER

Dr. Larry Loendorf to show effects of new technology on local rock art sites

American Prairie is pleased to announce a Speaker Series event featuring renowned rock art authority and archaeologist Dr. Larry Loendorf, who offers Lewistown residents a “first look” at his exciting new rock art discoveries near Ryegate and other nearby locations made possible using advanced technologies. The event, set for Saturday, July 13, at 1 pm will be held at American Prairie’s National Discovery Center, located at 302 W Main Street in Lewistown. Admission is free.

During his presentation, Dr. Loendorf will explain about the new technology called DStretch, which is utilized to enhance pictographs. DStretch, which stands for “decorrelation stretch”, is an enhancement technique first used on aerial photographs, and is now popular with rock art researchers. DStretch can bring out faint pictographs that are invisible to the naked eye. It works with digital camera images, with no special filters or lighting required.
