Find Your Center in Central Montana

Central Montana is a haven for those looking for a little space and time to reconnect with what's important. Take some time to yourself and wind through the most relaxing stops in Central Montana.

Stop 1: Hike Around Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake, located about an hour outside of Lewistown in the Big Snowy Mountains, provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and canoeing. The various trails surrounding Crystal Lake provide excellent views and photo opportunities. The Ice Caves Trail takes you to a permanent ice cave, while the Crystal Cascades Trail brings you to a scenic waterfall.

Choose a trail that makes you happy and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. Be sure to bring snacks and hydration so you won't feel rushed with your time in the wilderness.

Stop 2: Wander through the Labyrinth Garden

Tucked in the corner of the Frank Day City Park is Lewistown's own Labyrinth Garden. The public garden is a seven-circuit flower maze. A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world.

Find your center in this little garden oasis. It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes to walk.

Stop 3: Take in a Gallery Show at the Lewistown Art Center

Treat your mind to contemporary art at the monthly gallery show at the Lewistown Art Center. The Art Center promotes and provides engaged access to the arts, arts education, and cultural experiences in Central Montana. This includes Hands on Art (a 3-day-a-week after-school program), Youth Programming in the Summer, Adult Social Nights, and cultural events like monthly gallery receptions (First Friday of the month, but open to the public during normal business hours).

The Art Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m and Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Gift Shop, located inside the Art Center, features art and hand-crafted giftware from local and regional Montana artists consigning ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, paintings, prints, photography, books, CDs and much more.

Stop 4: Enjoy a relaxing massage

Lewistown has many talented massage therapists that specialize in a range of techniques, including Swedish, Asian body work, and therapy used in conjunction with chiropractic care.

Montana is known as Big Sky Country, and for good reason. Billowy white clouds seem to stretch on forever, and at sunset we witness vibrant paintings of red, purple, and gold; the skies really do look bigger here. But we sometimes forget that those endless skies continue on into the night as well. Along with the kind people and stunning landscape, the blanket of stars that unfolds itself at night tops the list for what makes Central Montana great. Even in the middle of town, you can observe more stars than usual with the naked eye. But driving just a few miles from the ambient light of houses and street lamps gives an even clearer picture of all that our big skies have to offer.

Take the quick 10-minute drive out just north of Lewistown at the Upper Carter Pond fishing access. While the fishing is day-use only, the gravel parking area provides a nice place to pull off the highway and stare in awe at the almost unbelievable abundance of stars.
